Singapore Blockchain Week (SGBCW) 2022 ended with a fireside chat with Hestor Peirce, Commissioner of the United States Securities and Exchange Commission. Peirce suggested that responsible regulation involves clear rules and consistent application, thus promoting responsible innovation in the field. She continued that strong international regulatory cooperation in the field of digital assets is an important part of building and maintaining an effective regulatory framework. The goal, she said, is to tackle bad actors, while allowing well-meaning innovators to focus on fulfilling their product’s promise and purpose.
The five-day event attracted 8,342 participants from 68 countries and over 700 organizations, including 36 exhibitors and over 110 speakers. The week-long series included a Web3 hackathon co-hosted by Blockchain Association Singapore, Morpheus Labs, and Huawei Cloud, the 2022 SGBCW Summit, two master classes, two innovation lab showcases, and a job fair co-hosted by Blockchain Association Singapore’s Banking and Financial Services Unit, NTUC, E2i, and Global Financial Institute, as well as other side events for Blockchain Association Singapore corporate and individual members.
Chia Hock Lai, Co-Chair of the Blockchain Association Singapore, said in her keynote address for the SGBCW 2022 Summit that the Web3 industry will recover strongly from the crypto winter, driven by big brands that are launching in the sector and the big investments raised to invest in Web3 projects. That said, he mentioned that the industry should focus on responsible innovation and avoid past mistakes of excessive speculation, leverage and unsustainable business models in order to gain the trust of regulators and policymakers.
Regarding the success of SGBCW2022, Lai said, “This is the second time we have held Singapore Blockchain Week since 2020, although it is an inaugural physical summit for this year. We did this to strongly support Singapore’s vision as a leading blockchain hub. We are encouraged by the enthusiasm of the participants, sponsors and speakers who actively participated in the various events throughout the week. I hope Singapore Blockchain Week will continue to be a strong platform that brings together global regulators, innovators, thought leaders and the community to discuss important Web3 issues and propel the fledgling industry to growth. more sustainable and responsible in the future.
Additionally, 120,000 Singapore dollars ($87,000) was raised at the Blockchain for Good gala dinner, honored by guest of honor Desmond Tan, Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office and Deputy Secretary of the NTUC. The Blockchain For Good campaign is a joint initiative between the Blockchain Association Singapore and the NTUC-U Care Fund to support the association’s various assistance programs.
